Staff Introductions- Amy Tierney

In high school, I was certain I wanted to be a doctor. I envisioned myself on the Labor & Delivery floor of a hospital, witnessing the miracle of new life every day. I dreamed of performing surgeries, making life-saving decisions, and changing lives through medicine… perhaps influenced by my love of the TV show Grey’s Anatomy.

My school offered a unique opportunity for students interested in medicine to shadow a physician for a week. I eagerly signed up, fascinated by everything I was learning. But something was missing.

One day, I witnessed a moment that would change everything for me. A couple was receiving the results of their baby’s genetic and chromosomal testing. When the doctor entered the room and delivered the devastating news of a life-altering diagnosis, the couple wept. The doctor, with a brief expression of sympathy, said she was sorry and then left the room.

As we walked away, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about how I felt about that encounter. These parents were experiencing one of the most complex moments of their lives, and yet they were left to process it alone. I felt frustration rise in me. I wanted to run back into that room and weep with them.

That frustration soon transformed into passion. As I progressed through college, I fell in love with psychology and the profound impact of therapy. I realized that while I may not be delivering babies or performing surgeries, I am helping bring new life through healing, hope, and transformation.

Now, as a therapist, I feel deeply honored to walk alongside people in their moments of grief, joy, and everything in between. Every session is a reminder of why I chose this path: to be a safe space for others, to offer comfort where it is needed, and to remind people they are never alone in their struggles.
